The Tazewell County Health Department (TCHD) is the coordinating agency for solid waste planning in Tazewell County. Through an agreement with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, TCHD has been given authority to inspect, investigate and enforce state regulations on all pollution control facilities within the County. TCHD's Solid Waste Management Department assists communities, schools, organizations and businesses throughout the County with a variety of waste reduction, recycling and education programs that benefit both public health and the environment.
The aim of Tazewell County's Solid Waste Management Department is to implement a county-wide approach to solid waste management which addresses the environmental and economic issues within the County as follows:

Code Enforcement & Inspections The goal of the County's Code Enforcement & Inspections Program is to minimize environmental damage. This program acknowledges that damage to the environment is a threat to the public health, safety and welfare of county residents. One of the significant sources of this destruction, damage and harm are the improper and unsafe transportation, treatment, storage, disposal and dumping of waste materials. Under an agreement with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the County of Tazewell, the Tazewell County Health Department has been given authority to inspect, investigate and enforce state regulations on all pollution control facilities and illegal disposal activities within the County. Tazewell County's Recycling Education Program provides solid waste education to students, businesses, community organizations and the general public. TCHD is pleased with the positive benefits that this program offers, including educational, environmental, economic, community goodwill, community involvement, increased recycling decreased land disposal of garbage and increased awareness to buy recycled. The curriculum offers information on the three R's (reduce, reuse and recycle) buying recycled, composting, safe disposal options for household hazardous wastes and old paints. The program provides for presentations, interactive exhibits, educational displays, lesson plans, activities, games educational promotions and participation in special events such as the Clean Water Celebration and Environmental Education Day. The program can include the hosting of field trips, tours, workshops, teacher/adult leader training and a vermin composting demonstration., Other resources include a variety of videos, industry magazines, books, brochures, posters and other materials. In many cases, the improper use, storage and/or disposal of hazardous household products can cause a health threat to one's family. Containers stored over a long period of time can deteriorate and the resulting spill could cause the release of toxic gases or even an explosion. As an alternative to storing or improperly disposing of the unwanted chemicals, TCHD encourages residents to take advantage of Illinois EPA sponsored Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events. The program provides an opportunity for residents to safely dispose of unwanted household chemicals such as old pesticides, waste oil, paint, solvents, household cleaners, etc. Contact TCHD for location, dates and times of the next scheduled event Tazewell County places a high priority on removing toxic material from general household waste in order to safeguard public health and the environment. The County's public education programs are designed to inform people that many common products are toxic or contain harmful substances. Long term storage of these products creates additional problems in that containers deteriorate and leak over time creating fire hazards or safety threats to children and family pets.
